June 23, 2011

Thursday:

Phillip and I were doing some reading on the West A Price website last night about childhood nutrition. I think we are going to start giving her some egg yolk as a handy, quick, simple baby food. For some reason, I've had a lot more trouble keeping up with her baby food than I did with Liam. I think it's because she doesn't care for purees too much, and prefers finger foods.

So, egg yolks it is for today. Then I need to maybe every few days make some sweet potatoes, or butternut squash and keep on hand in the fridge for her. I think will solve all the eating idea woes. She's very eager to eat anything we are, at least to try to. Yesterday, Liam and I were eating celery and we gave her a stalk to chew on. It was nice and cold, so she really liked it.

Wednesday:

Last night there was a thunderstorm, which I thought would wake the kids up, but they slept through perfectly fine. The weather also said that there would be a nice temperature drop of a high of only 97 today! WOW! What a relief from the 110+ degree days! Bonny organized the play group to meet up at a playground up the street from us since the weather was expected to be better, and the kids could all play and have a picnic. Sounded great...in theory. By the time I got done with just two grocery stores I was sweating and ready for some AC. The kids were too. Since we've been without rain for so long, I forgot what a good rain does for the next day, high humidity! We came home, Annabelle went potty (which she held the whole time were out), and we had lunch. Phillip worked from home today, and after Annabelle went pee after her bottle, we put them down for nap.

Tuesday:

We had some friends over this morning Vanessa and her 19 month old little boy named Wyatt. He was all over the place and I think that made Annabelle nervous. When it was time for her morning nap, I put her down and Vanessa was very surprised how easy it was for her to go down. I told her I know just how lucky I am.

For the rest of the day she's seemed pretty grouchy. I think it's time to be a little more liberal with the solid foods. I think I may start just before nap times and at dinner giving food, at least offering it.

Liam and her also played some Peek-a-Boo over the foot of our bed today. I still can't get enough of the feeling I get when I see them play together. I wish I could bottle it up.

Monday:

We went out to eat tonight at Texican Cafe. It wasn't the greatest, but Annabelle had a blast. It all started with my sunglasses that she really liked, then she got to eat some little diced tomatoes and some beans. Then the highlight of the evening for her was when a family a couple tables away came to sit down who had a baby probably just around her age. She and the baby spent a lot of time staring, smiling and babbling to each other. I think they both empathized that each were stuck in a high chair. Then once the other family took their baby out and held him, she wasn't having the chair any more.

Sunday:

It's actual Father's Day today and since I didn't put anything together for Phillip from the kids, I should probably do something this week. He did go on a bike ride in the morning while we went to church. While we were waiting for nap time to come, Phillip had some one on one time with the kids and caught some cute pictures.

We went to pick up milk and a few other errands and then just hung out in the evening. This was one of the few times Phillip was out with us when Annabelle was wrapped and I think he is still a little taken aback with all the stranger comments of adoration of her. She's cute and it is a relatively uncommon site to see a baby in a shirt like thing carried around by a care giver. I'm still trying to get Phillip to wrap her, but I don't think that will ever happen.

June 18, 2011

Saturday:

Phillip and I have decided that on Mother's Day and Father's Day instead of having a single day, we both deserve an entire weekend. So today was the first day of Father's Day weekend. Usually, on any other day, Phillip gets up with the kids, but I did this morning in light of the given holiday weekend.

I may have been dreaming this morning as Annabelle was waking up, but I almost thought I heard her say 'Ball'. I've been trying to get her to say 'Mama', and that hasn't shown to work yet either. We shall see.

In the morning I got her dressed in her 'Daddy Makes Me Smile' shirt, which is a matter of fact in our house when it comes to her and Daddy. She's obviously too young to understand the concept of Father's Day, but one day, she maybe will.

June 17, 2011

Friday:

I gave Annabelle her early evening bottle and as we were trying to wrangle together Liam's dinner in the kitchen, I had her on my hip facing out. I think I was putting a little too much pressure on her stomach, as Phillip and I heard a 'splat' and then I felt goo under my foot with my next step. "What was that?" Phillip asked as he looked down and saw the golden milky icky-ness I had just stepped in. "I think that came from Annabelle." This really put it over the top for Phillip and he proceeded to the back of the house with his mouth covered making retching noises. I thought it was hilarious.

A potty update: We've used one diaper all day today, even through naps, and had only one accident, which was most likely due to having a new person here and not being able to pee when I did put her on the potty just before it happened. YAY!

June 16, 2011

Thursday:

We went to Kerby Lane today to meet up with Bonny and Beth for brunch. It's funny that neither of them had their kids, and both said, "Oh bring yours, it won't be a big deal!" They are very well behaved kids, and I am truly thankful for that, and in all honesty, I do forget that every now and then, and I'm working on trying to remember that myself so I'm maybe less likely to encounter situations where it is taught to me. On the way, in the back seat, I could hear both the kids laughing and carrying on back and forth making all kinds of noises playing with each other. Music to my ears. I have go to savor this, as I know when they are older, their exchanges in the back seat are bound to not be as pleasant. Annabelle napped in the wrap, to which Bonny is very excited about using her's once Oliver comes. She woke up towards the end of brunch and nibbled on a cucumber slice and a bell pepper for a little bit before it was time to head home. When we got here, she had a wet diaper, but I put her on the pot anyway. She went right away. Then I fed her her bottle, and waited till her next pee, so I could lay her down for nap. She started to go off the potty for a bit, and when I noticed it, I put her on the potty and she finished there. I think now, she is starting to 'try' to go when we put her on the potty, and she's now learning that going on the potty is what is acceptable and not on the floor. That's the tough one to master.

Tonight, when I was rocking Annabelle, Liam wanted to come in and rock with us. He crawled up in the rocking chair as I fed her and snuggled up at my side. Between me and Phillip, we usually tag team bedtime, and while one of us feeds Annabelle, the other reads Liam a story. Tonight, we just combined them. The kids snuggled with me (which Phillip caught a picture of) and Phillip brought in The Little Red Hen to read to us all for bedtime. I think this is going to be our new tradition for bedtime.

Wednesday:

I finally managed to get out of the house today to get to the grocery store. I was assuming Annabelle would nap in the wrap the whole time and that wouldn't be a big deal. It seems though, today, more people than usual stopped to ooo and aahh at her, which kept her awake, leading to a very cranky baby come time to eat again at home and nap. It was about a 30 minute ordeal trying to get her drink her bottle, and a lot of that was filled with crying and squirming. She will scream, and then ravenously go to the bottle and drink a few drinks, and then stop and scream again. I really was proud for keeping my patience and tried to connect with what was going on to try and help her. After a while, I figured out that the nipple of the bottle was letting milk out too fast for her. It's such a difference between her and Liam, it's hard to remember to examine those things. With him, the faster the better, he would just gulp it down. Not her. Any amount of dripping of milk from the bottle is too much for her. I wonder why that is. In the back of my mind, I start to think that it could be due to the trauma she may have had directly after she was born, with the suctioning, tubes, etc. When I think that, it makes sense, and it really makes my heart break for her. Either way, she just needs to take some things, a little slower and gentler. I can do that as her Mom.

June 14, 2011

Tuesday:

Today we had a lot of just being at home. I have started a note pad on when Annabelle eats and drinks and goes pee, and that's proving to be very helpful. She's really catching on. So much, I think I may put together a sort of course on potty training your your child at an early age course that I offer to clients. It's something to think about. I don't have much experience yet, but I'm wondering what that would take. We shall see. She continues to go pee through out the morning on the potty, and during the evening when we are trying to get dinner together, it's a little more difficult to keep a good eye on her.

When we were getting ready to go to our first Attachment Parenting meeting (more on what that in further down), I had to figure out how to get ready, while still monitoring the pottying of Annabelle. According to the 'log' I started, she wasn't due for another pee in about 30 minutes, so I hopped in the shower. As I was stepping out, Liam comes in, "Mom, tell Anbel not poop in my room." He's wasn't upset, but more concerned. I did tell her that she can't poop in her brother's room, which she had, and I think that was understood as much and met telling Liam that she's a baby, potty training, and these things sometimes happen. It's wasn't too bad to clean up though, it would have been much worse had it been in a diaper. We got packed up and headed out.

Attachment Parenting follows eight principles,
1) Prepare for Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting
2) Feed with Love and Respect
3) Respond with Sensitivity
4) Use Nurturing Touch
5) Ensure Safe Sleep, Physically and Emotionally
6) Provide Consistent and Loving Care
7) Practice Positive Discipline
8) Strive for Balance in Your Personal and Family Life

Basically it's a bunch of birth conscious, baby wearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, almost hippy mamas who get together and try to help each other figure out how to raise kids without emotionally scarring them one way or another. I like it, it's very insightful and I get to meet moms who are like minded.

Monday:

Today, Annabelle has done great on the potty! While she did wake up wet this morning, she was wet, and I did put her on the potty for a bit, which she didn't pee, so I went on with the day and gave her a bottle. Twenty to thirty minutes after that I put her on the potty with no pee, but after about an hour from her bottle, I put her back on and she peed right away! YAY! I was super happy. Then she took her morning nap, woke wet and poopy, still put her on potty with no more action, and went on to give her her milk. She only drank half the bottle, to which I thought I'd have trouble getting her to potty in the next thirty minutes, but I put her on about then, and she went almost right after i put her on it! We headed out to run a few errands, and I took her bottle with me for her to finish. We were out about an hour, and as soon as we got home, I checked her diaper and she was dry, so I put her on the pot. This time it was immediately that she peed! I was so proud! Perfect time to nap now! Full belly and empty bladder.

From there, there wasn't much luck. One accident after she woke up. She stopped playing and locked eyes with me and I just knew she was peeing. Sure enough I had a mess to clean. Then when Phillip and I were cooking dinner and she and Liam were playing, without us helicoptering her, and she peed and thought the texture and temperature of her mess on the tile was quite interesting. Liam came running over, "Mommy, will you put Anbel on potty?!" Ewww. We got her cleaned up promptly and told her that pee goes in the potty.

I did today start keeping a journal about when I feed her and when she potties so I can get a better idea on her schedule. I'm thinking it may be worth setting a timer as well.

Sunday:

This evening, when we were getting the kids settled in bed, Phillip went in to Annabelle's room and, of course, she was standing up, smiling away like she was ready to play! I'm glad he snapped a few pictures of her. She's so comical in the things she does. She's very into standing too. I don't see her much sitting up anywhere, she usually crawls over something she can pull up on and does. She's very anxious to walk, I think she sees Liam walking and running and wants to keep up with him.

June 11, 2011

Saturday:

Annabelle woke up around 8:30am, after Ruth had already left for her class. I got lucky and she peed twice and pooped once in her potty chair. I also discovered that she now is able to get off of the potty chair herself, if so inclined. It was an awkward experience to watch her lean slowly over the front, precariously outstretching her arms as if floating in mid-air. Annabelle will likely be walking soon. She pulls herself up to stand on any convenient piece of furniture.

June 10, 2011

Friday:

Tonight we went over to Tony and Trish's for dinner. We hadn't seen them in a long time, and Annabelle didn't hesitate to be her usual social self this time. But...they did have a dachshund dog, that was quite jumpy. Also, his claws were less than comforting when they traveled down your leg. Annabelle was sitting up on the floor and Bo, the dog, came running in, excited, and pounced on her, which really freaked her out. She fell over, screamed, and was probably the most scared I have ever seen her. I picked her up, sent the dog outside and really gave her some mommy love. I held her for quite a while, and had to step outside with her on my hip, and as soon as Bo came running over to my leg, Annabelle, on my hip, screamed, shook, and kicked her legs in terror. I felt so bad. We stayed inside for a bit, till much later in the evening. At the end of the night, when she sat with Phillip on his lap, she would just sit there and watch Bo run around. Never once did she give any motion that she wanted to get down. I think she likes our dog better.

June 9, 2011

Thursday:

Annabelle loves to follow Liam around the house. She will go in the hallway and Liam knows she's not to go in any of the rooms herself, so he's usually pretty prompt to shut all the doors to keep her contained. Every now and then, she goes into the bathroom, and he and she stand or kneel by the tub and bang on it. It makes a fun, loud, echoing sound, which they both love. Annabelle is standing up a lot, so this is just another place she gets to practice that.

I think the standing up is a milestone that is causing some frustration for her. At night, it usually takes forever for her to drink her bottle, and that's if we actually get to drink it, and when we do, it's never more than five or six ounces. But, we'll give up, put her in bed, and then later walk in and she's unswaddled herself, and standing up in her crib smiling at us. It's pretty cute, but kinda frustrating with the feeding stuff.

As far as a potty update, I put her on after she drank her milk in the morning and she didn't pee. I left her diaperless, with a close eye on her for a bit, and still didn't pee. Then, we moved to the living room, with her off the pot, and she crawled over to it and started scooting and patting it. I decided it'd be a good idea when she does this to let her know that that is what she can do to signal me she needs to pee, so I put her on. Then, she peed! Whoa! Okay...now I'm starting to get excited about this potty training stuff.

As it is laundry day, and Annabelle is now awake when we are out hanging clothes, I had to figure out how to take her with me, without her being on the ground, so I figured out how to wrap her on my back. Something I could never figure out with Liam, I'm glad I can do it with her. Liam, our household photographer, was kinda enough to snap this picture of us.

Wednesday:

We went to pick up Nanny Frances in the morning (5:00am) since I had a birth to go to early in the morning. I planned on the kids going right back to sleep when we got home, and after we picked her up and got home, it didn't look to promising. When Annabelle saw Frances in the house when we came in, she started squeeling, kicking her legs, and just smiling in excitement! Frances told me that she, indeed, did go back to sleep, but it took a little rocking in the rocking chair. She said they were great today.

I didn't tell her she had to continue the potty training, as I don't expect anyone to do that except me, and Frances isn't all to convinced it's going to work, but I told her what we were doing, and that she could do if she wanted to. Frances said she woke up dry in the morning, put her on the pot, and she peed! She was really surprised too. I was too, since Frances is a whole new person in this training. She didn't put her on again, which I don't blame her for.

June 7, 2011

Tuesday:

We're doing the potty training again today, and she pee three times! I think she may be getting it. I don't know though, it's always hard to tell. Yesterday, she would only happen to pee when I walked out of the room, like to tend to Liam and his potty work, and when I'd come back, she would have peed. We still both give her lots of praise and such. Liam still likes to take the potty and dump the pee, so that's probably taking more patience from me than the actual potty training with Annabelle, but I think that will be resolved soon. Anyway, today she peed as soon as I put her on while I was sitting right in front of her. Maybe she's losing her pee-shy-ness. It's looking promising, but again, I'm not getting my hopes up.

June 6, 2011

Monday:

So...we've started potty training Annabelle. Yes, I know, she's not even 9 months, but we trained Liam 'early', and I was reading a book by a 'child expert' who talked about potty training, and her suggestion on how to do it. When I read it, she actually suggests the same 'method' I used for training Liam at 15 months. And...she talks about starting training from 9-15 months! She later describes why to start at 9, and she says this is where babies are able to sit up freely without support usually. Well, Annabelle has been doing that for quite sometime, so we gave it a shot. The worst thing that happens is I clean up a few pees, and we go back to diapering. Which isn't all that bad, especially since we have all our diapers bought.

Today I was blown away! She peed twice and pooped once in the potty and NO messes! It's pretty amazing and I hope it keeps up. I think we may have caused some regression with the poop though. We were all in the living room in the evening and she was on the potty for a few minutes, and I was about to take her off, but then she started turning red faced and grunting, so me, Liam and Phillip all yelled 'YAY! POOP! POTTY!' etc, and she stopped and looked at us like we had came out of no-where and startled her. She did poop, but I don't know if she got it all out.

Here's how we are doing it. When she wakes up from a nap or in the morning, we go straight to the potty. She sits down for about 5 minutes or till she pees. While she is on it, I talk to her about 'we are going potty', and I show her the sign for potty. If she pees, me and Liam get all excited and clap and praise and whoop and holler (not too much as I've found she get's kinda frightened with too much of the whooping and hollering) and tell her, "Yay! You went potty!" and again sign the sign for potty.

If she doesn't pee, we just say, "Nope, no pee." And then go on with our day.

We do this again about 20-30 minutes after she drinks her milk. I usually leave her diaper off at this time as to try and 'catch' her peeing if she doesn't happen to be on the pot. If she doesn't pee in the 5 minutes after I've waited the 20-30 minutes, I'll put her back on after a little while.

It's pretty crazy. The 'child expert' lady says to find out the 'cues' your baby gives for needing to pee. I read this with Liam and I must be blind, because I've never figured out those 'cues' they all speak of. I think so far I'm just getting lucky with her the times she has gone. Maybe at some point, she will get the idea that pee goes in the potty. Who knows, but we shall see.

June 5, 2011

Sunday:

Today is our last day with Liam and Annabelle. The house will be so empty when they are gone. The best was this morning was when I woke up and Annabelle was sitting up in her bed (she slept in our room) and just talking and smiling at me! How could you start a day any better than that! Then before they left Liam wanted to go outside because Phillip was packing the car. We sat in the golf cart and he pretended to drive. Then he sat on the riding lawn mower and pretended to drive it too. I asked him where he was going and he said Home Depot, imagine that. Then we gave lots of hugs and kisses before they had to go home. We are so glad that Ruth and Phillip let them stay with us. Our time with them is priceless.

June 4, 2011

Saturday:

Day Three. NaNa and Padad were supposed to come out and have lunch with us today. Mudder fell on Friday and hurt her ankle so she could not get out. Mudder is Poppa's grandmother and she is in her nineties. So we packed up Liam,Annabelle, and MiMi and headed to their house for lunch. They also had not seen the little ones in awhile so they enjoyed lots of hugs and kisses and play time. About 2:00 in the afternoon Liam and Annabelle were getting fussy, it was their naptime. Liam climbed up in one of the chairs and fell asleep and Padad wanted to hold Annabelle. He sang to her and she fell asleep! When we got back home Phillip and Ruth were at the house. They had lots of chigger bites and Phillip's allergies were bad. They had a good time but were glad to see the kids. It has been such a joy to have our grandkids here with us.

June 3, 2011

Friday:

Day Two of our time with Liam and Annabelle. Gary picked up MiMi and she came to our house to spend some time with Liam and Annabelle and I had asked her to spend the night with us. It has been awhile since she had seen them and she thought that they had really changed! Friday night Liam and Annabelle were sitting in the floor playing with some toys that I have here at the house for them to play with. There is a Barbie doll that Annabelle was playing with and she pulled the head off! I thought that it was very funny but Liam was very upset and asked me to put the head back on the doll. That reminded me when Phillip was little and wanted to play with an old baby doll that was mine. Well, he was playing with the doll and the head came off! It upset him and he never touched the doll again.

June 2, 2011

Thursday:

Phillip and Ruth have gone camping for their wedding anniversary. We told them that we would be happy to keep Liam and Annabelle for them. So today is day one. Gary is working at home and taking vacation so he can be with Liam and Annabelle too! I needed to go to Kroger for a few things this morning. I have to admit to being a little nervous taking a 2 and a half year old and an 8 month old out. It has been over 30 years since I have done anything like that. I just did not know if I could handle it or not but we went and managed quite well. Everyone thought that Liam and Annabelle were just so cute. Of course they were not telling me their GiGi something that I did not know. We made it just fine, but I will have to admit I was glad to get home before they got too restless!

June 1, 2011

Wednesday:

We headed out to Gigi and Papa's today, and Annabelle did great the whole ride. It wasn't until we pulled into their neighborhood that she started to get restless. She does these little outbursts that we call 'Annabelle Shout Outs'. It's sudden shouts of 'AHH!', 'OHH!', 'DAA!' It's really funny and it really does come out of no where, and sometimes takes you by surprise. I guess she's just letting us know she's still there, as if we have forgotten.

May 31, 2011

Tuesday:

Annabelle was in our room, playing with her toy crab. I made it squeak a few times by pressing on its eyes. Both of the kids thought it was quite amusing. Liam quickly grabbed it and began to play, as I do, with Annabelle by moving the toy close to her face at a high rate of speed, stopping just short of contact to startle her. Annabelle loves this. Unfortunately, Liam's coordination is not yet developed to the point of consistent restraint, so he ended up bopping her on the head a couple of times. All in all, Annabelle had a great time with this. She would follow us from one room of the house to another.
